It’s Jolie’s birthday issue, and the theme this year is weird fables, folktales, and legends! Doing the weird this way is hard, because the broadest, top-level definition of “weird” is speculative elements that do not appear in the folklore register, but the stories in this issue accomplish their goals spectacularly. We’ve even got dueling (yet wildly different) Blackbeard stories, because while it’s true that there’s nothing new under the sun, what matters is what you do with those building blocks.
